Tjuvholmen Icon Complex - Oslo, Norway
Renzo Piano Building Workshop
The Icon complex houses a museum for the Astrup Fernley collection of contemporary art and an office building. Located in the harbor of Oslo, Norway, three buildings unfold along a skewed axis and are unified under a double curvature, white fritted, glass roof. The roof contradicts the facade application of what is normally considered a domestic/agricultural vernacular, norwegian wood. For such an iconic civic building, the use of the traditional wood facade was a bold gesture;however, the material allots for a nuetral backdrop increasing the impact and sculptural quality of the glass roof.
